In this magnificent book, we discover the Swedish capital, Stockholm, from the water that surrounds it. Built on a series of islands, Stockholm is truly an archipelago city. With more than 200 lavish photographs, maps and illustrations, we are invited to see Stockholm with fresh eyes. The book takes us on a sweeping tour of buildings, quays, islands, bridges, canals and beach walks. It is packed with archipelago boats, sailing, paddling, fishing, shipping and architecture, along with history and geology. The book provides an all-encompassing depiction of how nature and water have shaped the city: how geological chance created the archipelago and Lake Mälaren; why the city is located where it is, and how we continue to build and live by the water. It is a story that begins millions of years ago and takes us right up to the latest architectural styles.

The book was created by photographer Jeppe Wikström and architect Per Kallstenius. Wikström is one of Sweden’s best-known photographers and he has published a string of books about Stockholm and the archipelago. Kallstenius was Stockholm City’s top architect from 1984 to 1989, and again from 1994 to 2010. Nobody has held this position for a longer period of time. Kallstenius had a passion for portraying the city’s development over time.
